The Samurai and the Prisoner

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's 2026 Japanese film is set in a besieged castle in the sixteenth century. Lord Murashige has risen against a powerful ruler and is now trapped inside his own walls. As the siege holds, unexplained deaths occur within the castle. Murashige is forced to consult the prisoner he keeps in his dungeon; the narrative builds a closed-room mystery rather than a war film and moves the real threat from outside to inside. It is adapted from a novel. Masahiro Motoki and Masaki Suda lead. Kurosawa is a director who builds tension from light and empty space, and the battle scenes here are kept limited. Who it's for: those who like Japanese period films and closed-room mysteries. Who it's not for: viewers expecting large battle sequences; the film stays inside the castle.
