Serpent's Path

Miyashita's small daughter has been abducted and killed. A quiet man named Nijima, who teaches mathematics, offers to help. Together they abduct the person they believe responsible, chain him in a warehouse, and begin questioning him. The man gives another name. Then that one gives another. As the chain lengthens, why Nijima is there becomes the real question. Kiyoshi Kurosawa builds his revenge narrative almost entirely in an empty warehouse. The camera keeps its distance, the violence mostly stays out of frame, and the tension comes from silence rather than action. Kurosawa does not only show that revenge fails to satisfy; he makes the search for justice itself suspect. Show Aikawa plays Miyashita and Teruyuki Kagawa plays Nijima.
