Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair

Quentin Tarantino wrote and shot Kill Bill as one film. After editing began the executive producer Harvey Weinstein suggested splitting it in two, so nothing had to be cut, the anime chapter included. This version puts the halves back together. The change that matters most is colour. The House of Blue Leaves battle with the Crazy 88 was turned black and white in America to avoid an NC-17; here those passages run in colour, so what the grading hid is now what you watch. The second change is in the seams: the cliffhanger closing the first part and the recap opening the second are gone, and in their place a 15 minute intermission. The anime chapter on O-Ren Ishii’s childhood runs long, in the version Production I.G financed and made from the original script unasked. The screening history is a story in itself: out of competition at Cannes in 2004, one show at Tarantino’s New Beverly in 2011, no nationwide run until Lionsgate opened it in December 2025. A good fit if you want the seams unpicked, an interval in the middle and the passage bleached for the censors restored. Not for anyone who cannot take the hospital chapter with the comatose woman or the eye gouging; the BBFC rated this version 18 for strong bloody violence and sexual threat.
