What The Man from Nowhere Is About
The Man from Nowhere (2010) is among the best known Korean action films and was the most watched film in Korea that year. Tae-sik lives alone above a pawnshop and speaks to nobody. So-mi, the little girl upstairs, keeps attaching herself to him; her mother is an addict and there is no attention for her at home. When the mother steals from the wrong people, both of them are taken. Then it emerges who Tae-sik is. The setup is familiar, and two things separate the film. First, the criminal network behind it: organ trafficking and child labour, not ordinary gangsters. Second, Tae-sik's own past. He takes his revenge for what he lost, not for the girl, and the film does not hide that. The knife fight at the end occupies its own place in Korean cinema. Choosing a blade over a gun, and shooting the scene close and without cuts, was not standard at the time. Won Bin was one of the most recognised actors of the period and has barely made a film since. Kim Sae-ron, who plays So-mi, was ten years old, and her performance carries the emotional centre of the film. She died in 2025. It runs 119 minutes. Good for: Korean action, revenge films, and hard thrillers. Less good for: the violence is very graphic and it involves a child in danger and organ trafficking. This is not light action.
