The King's Warden

The King's Warden (2026) became the highest grossing film in Korean box office history with 16.9 million admissions. Its subject is not a great battle. It is a village house. The year is 1457. A coup has taken place in Joseon, the boy king Danjong has been deposed, and he is exiled to a remote mountain region. Heung-do, the headman of the village, hears a rumour that any village hosting an exiled nobleman will be blessed with abundance. He volunteers, hoping to bring something to his impoverished community. Then he learns who his guest is. The film is not about a struggle for the throne. It is about the daily life of a boy who has already lost it and the man assigned to watch him: meals, winter, neighbours, fear. Danjong's loneliness is not political, it is childlike. Anyone who knows Korean history knows how this exile ended, and the film does not hide it. The tension comes not from what will happen but from when. Yoo Hae-jin carries the film. It won three prizes at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards, including the Grand Prize. It runs 117 minutes. Good for: Korean historical drama, period film, and true events. Less good for: the ending is heavy, the first half is slow, and anyone cool on court intrigue will meet a lot of names.
