Forgotten

Chang Hang-jun traces the premise to a story he heard over Christmas: a friend’s cousin had been away from home about a month and came back seeming like a stranger. He names Bluebeard as his second source, saying what he likes is the do not go in that room of it; the forbidden room in the film comes from there. The Korean title means Night of Memory; the international title says the opposite, forgetting, and the two names match the film’s two halves. Netflix signed for 190 countries while shooting was still going on; Jang Won-seok, head of the producer BA Entertainment, called such a contract during production unprecedented. In Korean cinemas it passed 1 million admissions within 12 days. The second half goes back to the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and hangs its solution on a shortage of money there, so the knot comes out of a debt rather than a conspiracy. The script has been remade: Reversión, a Spanish and Dominican co-production directed by Jacob Santana, opened in Spain on 7 November 2025. A good fit if you want the mystery resolved by class desperation rather than by anything supernatural or organised. Not for anyone impatient with repetition; the second half advances by retelling part of what the first half set up.
