What Get Out Is About

A horror film built on a weekend visit. Chris is a Black photographer. His girlfriend Rose takes him to her family's house in the country to meet them. Chris asks whether the family knows. Rose says it will not be necessary. The house is warm. The father is over-familiar, the mother practises hypnosis, and there are two Black people working there; both behave strangely. The next day there is a gathering. A garden full of guests keeps saying the same kind of thing to Chris. From there the film slowly becomes a trap. A cup, a spoon, an armchair, and falling out of consciousness. What the narrative is interested in is not hostility but admiration: the people in the film do not hate Chris; they want him, and the film takes its real horror from that. The camera flash is the cleverest element in the narrative and pays off at the end. The released ending is not the one first written. In the first version the last scene was far darker and it was changed because of the news of the period; that take was published on the home edition. It was made on a very small budget and took more than a hundred times that worldwide. The film won the Academy Award for Original Screenplay and was also nominated for Best Picture, Director and Actor. Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, Catherine Keener, Lil Rel Howery and Betty Gabriel are in the cast. Jordan Peele wrote and directed; it was his first film. Who it is for: anyone who likes films that join social criticism to horror. Who it is not for: anyone who cannot carry tension; the film gives no relief in its first half.
