Bernadette Le Saché What The Vanishing Is About
George Sluizer's 1988 film follows a woman who disappears at a service station and the partner who searches for her for three years. The man who took her makes contact. He sets a condition for the answer. The film shows the abductor from the start; the narrative makes curiosity itself the trap. It is a Dutch and French production. The close is extremely dark. The director later made a softer remake in America. Who it's for: those who like cold psychological thrillers. Who it's not for: viewers with claustrophobia or who cannot take hopeless endings; the film offers no relief.
