Tell No One

Alexandre, a paediatrician, lost his wife to a murder eight years ago and the case was closed. Then an email arrives with a video link: she is alive on it, looking into the camera. The message says one thing, tell no one. It comes from Harlan Coben's 2001 novel, with the story moved from America to France. Guillaume Canet directed and François Cluzet leads. Luc Besson produced and EuropaCorp distributed. The most cited passage is the long chase where Alexandre runs from the police and crosses a motorway on foot, cut to feel like one piece and completely resetting the film's rhythm. The screenplay departs from the novel in places, including the killer's identity. Coben said the film's ending was better than the one he wrote. At the 2007 César Awards it won four prizes: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Editing and Best Music. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 93 percent from 119 reviews and Metacritic at 82. Michael Caine called it the best film he saw in 2007. On a 13.5 million dollar budget it grossed 33.4 million worldwide, taking 22.2 million in France alone and finishing as the twelfth highest-grossing French film of 2006. Who it is for: viewers who like puzzle-box crime films. Who it is not for: anyone who will find the last twenty minutes overloaded. The film resolves everything in a single conversation, and that stretch really is crowded.
