Let Him Go

A film set in Montana at the start of the 1960s. George and Margaret have lost their son in an accident. Their daughter-in-law Lorna marries another man and takes their small grandson, and one day both disappear. Margaret has seen the man beating Lorna in the street and does not want to let it go. The two set out to bring the boy back. The trail leads to North Dakota and a family called Weboy. The family has established its own order in the area; nobody interferes with them and the law does not reach that far. The idea is that both sides use the same justification: each says it is protecting the family. The narrative proceeds in the shape of a western, but the time is modern and the heroes are an elderly couple. The source is Larry Watson's novel. Diane Lane plays Margaret and Kevin Costner plays George. Lesley Manville plays Blanche Weboy, the head of the family, and is the film's most threatening element. Thomas Bezucha directed. A solid example for anyone who likes slowly built tension and modern westerns. Before you watch, know this: the film proceeds calmly for a long time and the violence, when it comes, is sudden and very hard.
