The track under the climax of Jordan Peele’s film came from the marketing rather than the movie. Michael Abels slowed the 1995 Luniz song down and spread it across an orchestra for the trailer. It caught on so strongly that it was pulled back into the edit and used at the end, so the finale sounding like a trailer is no accident. The same joke works once more, when a voice assistant mishears an order to call the police and starts an N.W.A track, so a killing arrives on top of a gag. Minnie Riperton closes the film. Lupita Nyong’o built Red’s voice from spasmodic dysphonia, a condition that sends the voice into spasm. Carrying two roles, she could not risk her own instrument, so she worked with an ear, nose and throat doctor, a vocal therapist and her dialect coach. Peele’s first image was personal: as a teenager, coming off a train through an underpass, picturing the back of himself entering the same tunnel. Shooting began on the Santa Cruz boardwalk, with the house material taken in Pasadena. A good fit if you want to follow these one hundred and sixteen minutes through what sound does to the cut. Not for you if a strained voice held throughout, and the dialogue that suffers for it, will wear you down.
