Nope

Nope (2022) opens like an alien film, but Jordan Peele's actual subject is spectacle and what it costs. OJ and his sister Emerald come from a family that trains horses for film work. Their father dies in a strange accident and they realise there is something in the cloud above the ranch. They decide to prove it by filming it. The opening matters. The siblings describe their family's place in film history: the 1878 sequence of a horse in motion, counted as the first recording of movement, has a rider, and that rider's name never entered the record. The whole idea of the film is there: the people who make the spectacle possible are absent from the record. The second thread is a chimpanzee called Gordy. An animal working on a television series turns on the set. That section is the most disturbing part of the film and appears unconnected to the alien; the connection is conceptual. No creature used for entertainment ever agreed to it. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot on IMAX film, and most of the night scenes were genuinely shot in darkness. The creature design is among the most original in the genre, and what it actually is only becomes clear midway. It runs 130 minutes. Good for: science fiction horror, Peele, and layered films. Less good for: the sequence involving animal violence is harsh, the pace is slow, and the film explains nothing.
