Captain Marvel

A superhero film set on Earth in 1995. Vers fights in a military unit and does not remember the six years before. Images come in fragments and none of them fits. A mission goes wrong and she falls onto an enemy ship. Escaping, she comes through the roof of a video shop in Los Angeles. Agent Fury arrives at the scene. The two start working together and the film turns into a partnership comedy. From there the film is a search for memory. A base, old records, a flight accident and a friend. What the narrative is interested in is not power but the story she was told: Vers learns that the past she was given is false, and which side is the enemy changes. The Skrull line matters for that reason. The narrative sets them up as a threat and then dismantles its own setup. The 1990s are deliberate. A video shop, dial-up internet, a compact disc player and songs of the period are used inside the narrative. Fury appears young throughout. The actor's face was digitally rejuvenated, done across an entire film at this scale for the first time. The best line in the narrative is the friendship with Maria, and nobody turns it into a romance. Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, Lashana Lynch and Annette Bening are in the cast. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directed. Who it is for: anyone following the series and wanting period atmosphere. Who it is not for: anyone looking for tension; the character is almost never in real danger and the narrative cannot balance that.
