Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The team's second film. Something is stolen during a job and the team becomes the one being chased. A man saves them as they flee. He says he is Peter's father. Ego is a planet and at the same time that planet's consciousness; he invites Peter to come with him. The team splits in two. One group goes to the planet, the others stay with the ship and deal with the fleet pursuing them. From there the film is a story about a father. Ego tells his son who he is, and what he says sounds less and less good. Yondu is the third line. The man who took Peter as a child is thrown out of his own crew and moves to the emotional centre of the narrative. What the narrative is interested in is not family but choice: what the film says is that it matters less who the father is than who behaved like one, and the finale is built exactly on that. The line between Gamora and her sister is the second subject and the two characters' past is explained there. The tone is more emotional and more crowded than the first film; there are more jokes and that lightens some parts of the narrative. The use of colour is its signature. The planet designs are deliberately oversaturated and the song list again works inside the narrative. There is more than one additional scene in the credits. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Kurt Russell, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff are in the cast. James Gunn wrote and directed. Who it is for: anyone who liked the first film; the narrative is in the same vein and its feeling is heavier. Who it is not for: anyone looking for plot; the film goes nowhere for a long stretch and the middle is scattered.
