Annette Bening came to Myra Langtry in The Grifters as a replacement: a Los Angeles Times item dated 3 September 1989 had her stepping in for Geena Davis in the part. It brought her a supporting actress nomination at the Academy Awards. The same catalogue page keeps an account from the costume designer Richard Hornung, dated 1 February 1991, setting John Cusack's tasteful suits against the tarty, form-fitting outfits given to Anjelica Huston and to Bening, whose two characters Hornung called circling sharks. A year on she was Virginia Hill in Barry Levinson's Bugsy, with her costumes sewn at Bill Hargate Costumes; by many accounts, the page notes, she and Warren Beatty fell in love during production. Film Independent has twice named her in its leading actress category, for The Kids Are All Right in 2011 and for 20th Century Women in 2017.
