What The Great Outdoors Is About
A family planning a lakeside holiday is joined uninvited by the brother in law and his family. The brother in law wants something. The film rests on the contrast between two men: one wants a simple holiday, the other cannot stop performing. The narrative lines up mishaps one after another, and the real story only surfaces near the end. Dan Aykroyd and John Candy lead, from a John Hughes script. It is one of Annette Bening's first films. Who it's for: those who like the family comedy of the nineteen-eighties. Who it's not for: viewers wanting subtlety; the jokes here are large and direct.
