Some Kind of Wonderful

A high school boy who works in a garage manages to get a date with the most popular girl in school. His closest friend, a girl, says nothing about it. The film builds the triangle on class: the boy and his friend are from the working part of town, the girl from money. What it is known for is its ending; John Hughes had written a very similar story two years earlier and changed the ending under audience pressure, and reversed that choice here. Howard Deutch directed from a John Hughes script. Eric Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson lead. Who it's for: those who like the teen drama of the nineteen-eighties. Who it's not for: anyone who has just watched Pretty in Pink; the two share almost the same skeleton.
