A Quiet Place Part II

John Krasinski opens by handing over what the first film withheld: day one, in daylight, in a crowded town, creatures fully visible. That turns the series from a survival puzzle into a chase, and anyone who valued the earlier refusal to show may feel the mystery spent early. From there the story splits in two and cuts between the lines on matched sound, so the deaf point of view silence of the original becomes an editing device across two places. Main Street in Akron, New York got new facades and repainted shopfronts to stand in for the town; the baseball game was shot at Stenzel Street Field in North Tonawanda. Shoreline and island material came from Olcott and Dunkirk, the industrial interior from Lackawanna’s Bethlehem Steel plant, abandoned since 1983. Photography ran forty seven days in summer 2019. Krasinski wrote his first draft in three and a half weeks from one idea: Millicent Simmonds’s character would lead. Release was postponed five times between March 2020 and the May 2021 opening. A good fit if you want the first day staged openly in daylight and do not count the creature losing its mystery as a loss. Not a fit if you want a film that stands alone, since after the flashback it resumes where the last one stopped and ends unresolved.
