What The Hollars Is About
An illustrator living in New York goes home when he learns his mother is to have surgery. At the house his father's business has failed, his brother is divorcing, and nobody talks about any of it. The film moves between family comedy and illness drama; the narrative shows that the mother is the one holding everyone together and how fragile that is. The humour comes from the characters' incompetence. John Krasinski directed and stars, with Margo Martindale and Richard Jenkins. A real warning: there is a serious illness and a death. It was sold as a comedy and the second half is a narrative of grief.
