What Topsy-Turvy Is About
London, 1884. Gilbert and Sullivan have worked together for a decade, and their latest, Princess Ida, has met a cool press. Sullivan is tired of light opera and wants to write something serious; Gilbert cannot find an idea. A Japanese exhibition his wife takes him to breaks the block, and out of it comes The Mikado. Mike Leigh tells this as a workplace story rather than a triumph: rehearsals, cut songs, wounded actors, costume fittings, the drink and morphine backstage. He shows what the onstage gaiety costs the people making it.
