The Beguiled

During the Civil War a wounded Union soldier is found in the grounds of a girls' boarding school in the South. Instead of reporting him, the women take him in. As he recovers he promises something different to everyone in the house. The film draws all its tension from those lies accumulating under one roof; the narrative keeps reversing who is using whom. Don Siegel directed, with Clint Eastwood in the lead. It is adapted from a novel that Sofia Coppola filmed again in 2017; the two films differ markedly in point of view. A real warning: this version contains a flashback implying incest and a scene without consent. Its handling of the enslaved Black character is troubling enough that the 2017 version removed her entirely.
