The frame scenes added to the beginning and the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and the narrator, entered the screenplay at the studio's insistence so as to give the film an optimistic close, and they were shot months after the main photography. Don Siegel told Films and Filming in 1969 that the executives at Allied Artists wanted other moments cut from the film as well; whether that was done is unclear. By the same interview, the absence of any violence in the film and the holding of special effects to a minimum were a choice: Siegel and the producer Walter Wanger settled it deliberately. On Dirty Harry the lead was attached first to Frank Sinatra and the directing to Irvin Kershner; in December 1970 the studio announced that Clint Eastwood would both act and produce through his own company. By what Life wrote, Eastwood directed the suicide scene when Siegel fell ill with flu. Kristoffer Tabori, who turns up in a small part as Hippy Guy, was Siegel's son.
