Two European academies settled on the same film. Million Dollar Baby, made in 2004, was named best foreign film by the Italians the following year and by the French two years later. The French academy wrote that category to Clint Eastwood three times in all, the other two films being Mystic River and Gran Torino, and the Italians added a nomination for Letters from Iwo Jima. Honorary business stands apart: a 1998 César listing him with Michael Douglas and Jean-Luc Godard, and a Berlinale Camera in 2007. The mechanism behind the output comes from a British Film Institute review: a Warner Bros arrangement through his own company Malpaso that lets him shoot a film a year, on condition that he alternate the weighty projects with ordinary thrillers. He directed thirty-three of his fifty-six titles with us and appears in forty-one.
