What White Hunter, Black Heart Is About
A director who goes to Africa to make a film becomes obsessed with hunting an elephant instead of attending to the shoot. The producers wait, the crew waits, and he is out after the animal. The film criticises the legend of the artist; the narrative shows that what he presents as courage is selfishness, and watches everyone around him carry it. The ending is concerned not with the hunt but with its cost. Clint Eastwood directed and starred, adapting a novel that rests on what happened during a real production. A real warning: there is hunting and colonial-era racist conduct on screen. The narrative does not endorse it and does show it plainly.
