American Sniper

The most conventional element in Clint Eastwood’s 2014 film is the one with the least support in the book. Mustafa, the rival sniper who carries the third act, barely occupies a sentence in Chris Kyle’s memoir, where Kyle wrote that he never saw him. Steven Spielberg, who had the project first, wanted to build the enemy sniper into a genuine character, but his 160-page script would not fit the sixty million dollar budget Warner Bros had set, and he left in August 2013. Eastwood kept the duel and dropped the psychology. The distance is the second alteration. In the book the famous 2,100-yard shot is taken at an insurgent carrying a rocket launcher. The film transfers it to Mustafa, so anyone watching this as a record of what Kyle wrote should know the climax is a composite. Then there is the thing nobody misses. The doll in the hospital scene is not a stylistic choice: screenwriter Jason Hall explained that the first baby arrived with a fever and the second never showed up at all. The film’s most emotionally pitched domestic scene comes apart over a piece of plastic. Not for you if: you want the war’s justification argued. Iraqi characters have almost no dialogue across the 133 minutes, and the subject narrows to one soldier’s trouble settling at home.
