Amaran

The film tells the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan, an Indian officer serving in Kashmir who was killed in action in 2014. It runs on two tracks: the front on one side, and on the other the story of his wife Indhu from their meeting to the moment she is told. The centre of gravity is really that second track. Sai Pallavi's Indhu moves the person who waits, usually left in the background of war films, into the middle of the frame, and the best scenes belong to her. Sivakarthikeyan plays the officer. Rajkumar Periasamy directed, working from a chapter in India's Most Fearless by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh. It opened at Diwali, grossed over three hundred crore against a budget of a hundred and twenty, and finished as the second highest earning Tamil film of 2024. Its flaw is that the military material drifts toward a propagandist register, and the other side stays one dimensional. Who it is for: viewers who like war drama drawn from real events. Who it is not for: anyone wanting the politics of the conflict examined.
