What A Prayer Before Dawn Is About
A British boxer jailed in Thailand on drug charges tries to survive by joining the prison's Muay Thai team. He does not speak the language and nobody translates for him. The film carries that isolation into its form: the Thai dialogue is left unsubtitled, so the viewer understands no more than he does. The camera stays at the back of his neck, and the fights look exhausting rather than sporting. It is based on Billy Moore's memoir, shot in a real Thai prison with many former inmates in the cast. A real warning: rape, self-harm and withdrawal are shown at length and directly. This is not an easy prison film.
