Cornelius Keagon What Johnny Mad Dog Is About
Liberia, 2003. In the middle of the second civil war, Johnny and his friends are child soldiers in a rebel unit. They move from town to town: looting, guns, drugs, and comic nicknames. At the same time a girl named Laokolé is out on the roads pushing her father, who cannot walk, in a wheelbarrow. Their paths will cross. Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire shot it in Liberia and cast former child soldiers in the roles, saying they were the only people who could give sincere testimony to this. It is adapted from Emmanuel Dongala's novel and took the Prix de l'Espoir in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2008.
