What The Travelling Players Is About

A travelling theatre company tours Greece from 1939 into the early fifties trying to stage the same rural play, and never manages to finish it; war, occupation, civil war or the police always interrupt. The betrayals inside the company repeat the Oresteia, and even the actors' names come from it. Theo Angelopoulos builds three hours and forty-three minutes out of very few shots, and the years can change while the camera turns. Shooting began during the years of the junta, when this was not work that could be done openly. It is considered one of the essential Greek films.
