Theo Angelopoulos

Theo Angelopoulos worked in long, winding, meticulously arranged shots; 360-degree pans are plentiful and a single shot can run for minutes. The Travelling Players reaches from 1939 to 1952, a troupe of travelling players touring northern Greece and performing a tragedy of 1893 by Spyridon Perisiadis, locally well known and reminiscent of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In the nineties he became a regular at Cannes and made a trilogy of borders, The Suspended Step of the Stork, Ulysses' Gaze and Eternity and a Day. Ulysses' Gaze runs close to three hours, with Harvey Keitel as a director long in exile. Eternity and a Day took the Palme d'Or in 1998 and tells of a terminally ill writer, played by Bruno Ganz.
