Eleni grows up an orphan among refugees who came to Greece from Odessa. A family takes her in, she runs away with their son, and for thirty years she lives whatever history brings: exile, occupation, civil war, one loss after another. Theo Angelopoulos tells it in long unbroken takes, and images like the flooded village and the sheep hanging from the tree stay with you afterwards. It was the first film of a planned trilogy. The second came in 2008 and the third was never finished: the director died in 2012 in an accident during the shoot of his new film.
