What The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer Is About
In the final part of the trilogy the Japanese army has collapsed, and Kaji leads the few men left to him across Manchuria with one aim, to get back to his wife Michiko. On the way he meets starving soldiers, fleeing civilians and finally Soviet prison camps. His insistence on behaving decently faces its hardest test here, because what stands in front of him is no longer an army or an enemy but people trying to stay alive. Masaki Kobayashi closes a trilogy of more than nine hours not with surrender but with a question left open. Tatsuya Nakadai plays Kaji again.
