What The Bridge on the River Kwai Is About
David Lean follows a British colonel in a Japanese prison camp who makes building the enemy’s bridge a point of honour, while a team sets out to destroy it. Two blacklisted writers stand behind the script. Carl Foreman began it, Michael Wilson took over when Lean was unhappy, and they never collaborated; both worked in secret. The credit and the adapted screenplay award went to novelist Pierre Boulle, who spoke no English. The Academy corrected this years later, when both writers were dead. The bridge was not in Thailand. It was built at full scale over the Kelani river near Kitulgala in Ceylon and really blown up. Book and film part here too: in Boulle’s novel the bridge survives. The officer at the centre inverts the record. The real senior officer, Philip Toosey, slowed the work instead of speeding it, collecting termites to eat the timber and mixing the concrete badly. Ernest Gordon, a survivor, wrote in 1962 that none of them worked willingly, but at bayonet point and under bamboo lash. 8 nominations turned into 7 awards; Alec Guinness won lead actor, Sessue Hayakawa was nominated. A good fit if you want the finale knowing the bridge was real and destroyed in one take. Not for anyone taking it as history; the central idea contradicts the record.
