Nobody Knows

A woman in Tokyo walks out of the apartment and leaves four children behind. The oldest, Akira, is twelve, and everything lands on him. Hirokazu Kore-eda wrote it from the 1988 Sugamo child abandonment case but drew his own line: only the setting and the ending come from the real events. The method matters as much as the result. Shooting ran over a year, from autumn 2002 to summer 2003, and went in chronological order, so the children genuinely grow across the film. Kore-eda did not walk them through the script; during breaks he asked them to write in their own journals about what they were thinking, and he adjusted the script to their real preferences. Little Yuki's favourite sweet was changed because the actress preferred Apollo Chocolate. Yuya Yagira, who plays Akira, won Best Actor at Cannes at fourteen, the youngest winner in the festival's history and the first Japanese actor to take the award. Who it is for: viewers who want slow, observational cinema that refuses to extract emotion. Who it is not for: anyone who cannot watch child neglect. The film never steps in to rescue anybody.
