In Tokyo a lonely man's inflatable doll wakes up one morning and goes out to learn the city. Hirokazu Kore-eda declines to turn the premise into whimsy: the first thing the doll discovers is that the people around her are hollow too. Bae Doona plays it as bewilderment, producing a creature who is curious rather than pitiable, and the best passages are the quietest, particularly those in a video rental shop. Given the subject there are uncomfortable stretches and the film does not make them easier. One of his least discussed and strangest films.
