What On-Gaku: Our Sound Is About
On-Gaku: Our Sound was a low budget independent production that took over seven years to complete; director Kenji Iwaisawa largely self-funded it (including a 40,000 dollar crowdfunding campaign) with a team of animators who had little to no industry experience. The film had its world premiere at the Ottawa International Animation Festival on September 26, 2019, winning Best Feature, and screened in the out of competition Contrechamp section at the 2020 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Who it's for: anyone curious about an independent animated film completed over seven years by a crowdfunded, largely inexperienced team, that went on to win international festival awards. Who it's not for: viewers wanting polished, major studio budgeted animation, since this deliberately embraces a minimal, independent style.
