Fruits Basket -prelude-

Kyoko is a young woman who trusts no one and moves from one fight to the next. She meets Katsuya Honda, who arrives at her school as a trainee teacher. Katsuya is blunt, rude and unlike anyone else; Kyoko is first unsettled by him and then attached. When her family disowns her, Katsuya stays. Their story is the story of the parents of Tohru, the central character of Fruits Basket, and everyone who has followed the series knows how this relationship ends. Yoshihide Ibata's film looks at what came before the anime series. The weight of the narrative is not romance but a person being accepted for the first time, and how long that acceptance lasts. The final section connects to the series and adds a scene set after its conclusion. Who it's for: Fruits Basket viewers, and anyone who likes anime melodrama and character-backstory narratives. Who it's not for: It means nothing to a viewer who does not know the series. Part of the film also consists of re-edited material from it.
