What After Life Is About
The dead arrive at a waystation and are asked to choose a single memory, the only thing that will stay with them for good. Rather than converting the idea into melodrama, Hirokazu Kore-eda presents it as a workplace: clerks, files, a shooting schedule. The staff then restage the chosen memory with cheap props, and that cheapness is the most affecting thing in the film, because memory is already an imperfect reconstruction. Some of the people interviewed are not actors. It is impossible to watch without starting to choose your own, which is the design.
