I Wish

When the parents separate the brothers are separated too: Koichi lives in Kagoshima with his mother and grandmother, Ryunosuke in Fukuoka with his father. In Kagoshima the volcano keeps dropping ash. Koichi hears a rumour: when two trains on the new bullet line pass each other in opposite directions for the first time, whoever sees that moment will have a wish granted. The brothers plan to meet and get to that spot. Hirokazu Kore-eda directed. The leads are the real-life brothers Koki Maeda and Oshiro Maeda, with Kirin Kiki and Joe Odagiri in the cast. One detail of method explains the film's naturalness: Kore-eda did not write the script until the child actors had been cast, because he wanted to get more ideas from them. It opened in Japan on 11 June 2011 and took 1,543,385 dollars. The band Quruli wrote the score, seventeen tracks in all. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 94 percent from 77 reviews and Metacritic at 80. Who it is for: viewers who like family films told from a child's height and Kore-eda's quiet register. Who it is not for: anyone waiting for a resolution. The film offers no correct solution and leaves the children's list of wishes as it is.
