What To Each His Own Cinema Is About
This is not one film but thirty-three short ones. For the sixtieth anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival, its president Gilles Jacob set directors from five continents and twenty-five countries the same assignment: three minutes each on the subject of the cinema auditorium. The list of participants reads like a history of film: Manoel de Oliveira, Jane Campion, Ken Loach, Theo Angelopoulos, Lars von Trier, David Lynch, Roman Polanski, Aki Kaurismäki, Wong Kar-wai, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Gus Van Sant, Zhang Yimou, Abbas Kiarostami, David Cronenberg and the Coen brothers. Two segments in particular are remembered. Cronenberg's says what it is in the title: the suicide of the last Jew in the last cinema in the world. The Coens bring back Josh Brolin as Llewelyn Moss from No Country for Old Men and set him a new test: choosing a suitable French classic. The whole thing runs a hundred minutes. Who it is for: viewers interested in the cinema auditorium as a subject and in seeing these signatures side by side. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a coherent whole. The quality varies widely, and connecting three-minute fragments is left to the viewer.
