What The Dust of Time Is About
A Greek-American director is shooting a film in Rome, and what he is telling is his own family's story. It runs from Italy to Germany, from Russia to Kazakhstan, from Canada to the United States. At the centre of it is his mother, Eleni, caught her whole life between two men: Spyros, whom she married, and Jacob, whom she never let go of. The film moves back and forth across half a century, from the death of Stalin to Vietnam, from Watergate to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Theo Angelopoulos directs. It is the second part of his trilogy and the last film he completed; he died in 2012 without making the third. Willem Dafoe, Bruno Ganz, Michel Piccoli and Irène Jacob are in the cast.
