What The Bridge Is About
In the last months of the Second World War, Germany is conscripting sixteen year old boys. Seven classmates from a small town enlist together, egged on by each other. Partly to protect them, their commander assigns them to defend the bridge in their own town. Then the defeated army clears the area at speed, and the boys are left alone with American tanks at a bridge of no strategic value whatsoever. Adapted from Gregor Dorfmeister’s novel, Bernhard Wicki shows precisely what propaganda does: these boys are not fighting an enemy, they are fighting what they were taught.
