What Lacombe, Lucien Is About
A town in southwest France, 1944. Lucien is a farm boy who wants to join the Resistance, and the schoolmaster turns him away for being too young. Within days, more or less by accident, he falls in with the local unit working for the German police, and stays. He likes the gun, the car and the fear in people's faces. Then he falls for the daughter of a Jewish tailor in hiding. Malle, writing with Patrick Modiano, never explains the boy's choice, and France argued about it for years.
