What Au Revoir les Enfants Is About
Louis Malle's 1987 film follows a boarding school in occupied France. A new pupil's real name is different. The two boys become friends. The film makes the priests hiding Jewish children its real subject; the narrative runs through a child's eyes and explains nothing. It draws on the director's own childhood memory. It won the Golden Lion in Venice. It swept the Cesar awards in France. Who it's for: those who like the war told through childhood. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a hopeful close; the last scene is very hard.
