What Army of Shadows Is About
Jean-Pierre Melville's 1969 film follows a resistance cell in occupied France. One member is denounced. The group has to deal with a threat from inside. The film drops the language of heroism entirely; the narrative shows resistance as cold, exhausting work. Lino Ventura and Simone Signoret lead. The director had been in the resistance himself. It did not open in America until 2006. Who it's for: those who like restrained war drama. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a sense of victory; the film is hopeless throughout.
