What Twelve O'Clock High Is About
In the worst stretch of the daylight bombing campaign, one air group is falling apart. The crews are exhausted, the losses are heavy, and the commanding officer is too close to his men to be any use to them. General Savage replaces him and lays it out on day one: discipline, distance, no favours for anyone. The group recovers, and the cost comes out of Savage himself. Henry King opens on a man standing at an abandoned airfield after the war, remembering. It has been taught in leadership courses for decades.
