What Captain from Castile Is About
Spain, 1518. Pedro de Vargas, a young nobleman, makes an enemy of his neighbour De Silva, who serves the Inquisition, and when his family is destroyed he has to flee the country. With his friend Juan Garcia and a servant girl, Catana, he joins Cortés's expedition to Mexico. Once they land, Cortés drops exploration in favour of conquest. Henry King's 1947 film comes from Samuel Shellabarger's novel and tells the whole thing from the Spanish side; what the conquest meant for the people already living there stays outside the frame. It was shot on location in Michoacán, Mexico, and the Parícutin volcano, then erupting, went into the picture. Tyrone Power takes the lead, with a score by Alfred Newman.
