What The Three Musketeers Is About
A young man arriving in Paris from the provinces wants to join the king's guards, picks fights with three senior musketeers, and then joins them inside a court intrigue. The film stages its duels as incompetence rather than heroism: swords catch, people fall, fights end in mud. The narrative keeps the spirit of the novel while pushing the comedy forward. Richard Lester directed, with Oliver Reed, Michael York and Charlton Heston. This film and its sequel were shot together; the cast found out afterwards, and the dispute led to a lasting change in contracts. Who it's for: those who like classic adventure adaptation and physical comedy. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a serious swordfighting film.
