What Alexander's Ragtime Band Is About
Roger Grant, a classically trained violinist, disappoints his family and his teacher by forming a jazz band. The band takes off and makes a name. Roger falls in love with Stella, its singer, and because he is afraid of losing her he blocks her attempts to go out on her own. In 1917 the war separates them. Stella marries Roger's closest friend. When the war ends and Roger comes home, a concert at Carnegie Hall brings all three of them into the same room. Henry King's 1938 film is built on Irving Berlin's songs and runs twenty-five years of popular music through a love triangle. Tyrone Power, Alice Faye and Don Ameche play it.
