Kakha Gogidze What And Then We Danced Is About
A young dancer in a traditional Georgian ensemble finds himself in competition and in something else with a newcomer to the group. Levan Akin ties the rigid rules of the dancing straight to his subject: how a male dancer must hold himself is treated as a moral question rather than an aesthetic one, and this character does not conform. The rehearsals are physical and exhausting, with the camera close on the bodies. Screenings in Georgia were protested, which confirms the pressure it describes is not invented.
